London, 1940.

A city is at war, and under siege.

When Eve Duncan stumbles upon the body of a dead girl, she is shocked - but no one else seems very concerned.

With the imminent threat of invasion by the Germans, and bombing by the Luftwaffe, no one has the time to concern themselves with the death of a Polish girl.

But Eve is determined to find out what happened.

As all the young men have left to fight, there is a shortage of staff at the police station, and they happily let Eve take charge of the case.

Who is the mysterious girl?

Why was she killed?

Has her murder got something to do with the War Effort?

Or was it just A Murder of No Account?

'A Murder of No Account' is an gripping murder mystery set during wartime London. It is perfect for fans of Philip Kerr and Alan Furst.

'A real page-tuner, which captures the atmosphere of WWII London perfectly.' - Robert Foster, best-selling author of 'The Lunar Code'.

Julia Underwood is the best-selling author of 'War's Last Dance'.

A Murder of No Account An Eve Duncan Murder Mystery Book 1 eBook Julia Underwood

The setting is WW II London.

Eve works for the Censor Department of the Post office. She does not find her work interesting and when the chance comes along for her to help the Police Department, she is happy to oblige.

A young woman has been murdered and left in an alley on a rainy evening. And no one seems too interested in finding what happened.

Eve wants to know what happened. And she follows the clues from a hostel for Polish refugees to a bakery and back again.

She is being accompanied by her good friend Charlie. She and Charlie were among the first people to find the dead body. Also at the very edge of the story is her boyfriend Pete, and her parents. No one is much a part of the story other than Eve.

This is a hard book to review.

I liked Eve and found her to be interesting. Everyone else seems to be only a peripheral character. Surprisingly, Eve seems to easily forget information she is collecting for the police. Found that a little disconcerting.

The atmosphere is wonderful. The reader gets a feeling for London at the time before the blitz and just as the bombing is getting started.

I think the mystery could have been more difficult to solve. I also would have liked to get a little more character development for everyone in the story.

I hope the next book in the series is a better fit for this reader.

A Murder of No Account An Eve Duncan Murder Mystery Book 1 eBook Julia Underwood Reviews

Nice mystery with compassion for the victim the main character was likeable and smart setting was a big part of the story but I enjoyed reading this book
I just wanted to sit down & not gut-up till this book was finished. When I came to the end I was sad to have it end.
Thanks for providing the book at no charge for readers. I will definitely look for more from this author.
I liked this very much, and will seek out more of the series. The backgound of WWII London is interesting, and reminds me of some of the BBC mysteries.
A quick English war time murder mystery. Eve and a friend wander onto a murder scene and very strangely the inspector asks for help canvassing the neighborhood. Eve turns into quite the detective
I liked the era the author set the story in...WW in England...and the premise is great. A Polish refugee is killed for reasons unknown. The police are not really interested so they allow Eve, one of the citizens who stumbles across the body, to dig deeper. But it's not a very complicated or in depth story. Took me 1 1/2 hours to read and the ending is too succinct....almost abrupt. Would I be interested in the next book, maybe...if it's free and the author develops both the plot and her writing style.
The setting is England during WW II. The civilians are too busy with the war efforts to devote enough time to investigate the murder of a young foreign girl. Enter local citizen Eve Duncan who stumbles upon the crime scene and is offered the opportunity to help the police who are too short-handed to perform a proper investigation. Although this seems odd, maybe it's plausible given the chaotic events of a world war. Ms. Duncan, with police support, plods through the list of involved characters she developed during her questioning of witnesses to find a motive for the crime. This is not a gory fast-action violent crime novel, but has a rather slower more realistic pace that seems to fit the period and political events of the era. I found it a most interesting story and thankfully, not an overly long one. Apparently it's part of a series so if readers like, they can get more.
